Calvi Ceschia Viganò's Villa S-2113: Subtraction as Coastal Architecture

On the Italian Riviera, Calvi Ceschia Viganò Architetti Associati completed Villa S-2113, a five-bedroom coastal home that operates through subtraction rather than addition. The house sits compact and horizontal on the coastal margin, with principal rooms oriented toward the sea through large glazed surfaces. Board-formed exposed concrete, manually bush-hammered in varying grain sizes, serves as the primary ordering material, modulating light and shadow across different planes. Inside, Genoese terrazzo floors extend the structural logic, with the staircase and central load-bearing wall cast solid and ground down for near-continuity with the radiant floor system. The interior sequence uses compressed corridors and sudden openings to direct views toward the sea. Bespoke furniture in burnished metal and dark wood integrates with the reduced chromatic palette of mineral tones and matte surfaces. Exterior elements like timber decking and stone walls maintain the coastal landscape as the primary reference. The project's central formal proposition is the relationship between compact built mass and open coastal horizon, maintained from site plan to door handle specifications. Material choices—bush-hammered concrete, Genoese terrazzo, burnished metal—are intended to age well, developing patina over decades.
