Calvi Brambilla designs 11th Triennale Design Museum as a cityscape

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The 11th edition of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, curated by Chiara Alessi, Manolo De Giorgi, Maddalena Della Mura, Vanni Pasca, and Raimonda Riccini, explores the question of Italian design identity through 180 objects from the museum's collection, produced between 1902 and 1998. The exhibition, titled "Storie," is designed by Studio Calvi Brambilla, who conceived the layout as a metaphorical city with streets and buildings, allowing visitors to navigate diverse thematic landscapes. The five curators, selected by Silvana Annicchiarico, each developed a specific theme, and Calvi Brambilla tailored design strategies for each. The entrance features a large mirror doubling the monumental staircase, referencing past installations by Lucio Fontana, Aldo Rossi, and Margherita Palli, and a tunnel creates a transition into the exhibition space. The studio, known for blurring boundaries between architecture and design, emphasizes disciplinary contamination and views design as unapologetically market-driven. Current projects include transforming a palazzo in Murano into an exhibition space for Barovier & Toso, a glass company founded in the 13th century, where contemporary artworks will dialogue with historic pieces.
