Calvert 22 Foundation sanctioned as 'undesirable' by Russian government
The Russian government has designated the Calvert 22 Foundation as an 'undesirable' organization, imposing sanctions on the London-based cultural institution. Founded in 2009 by Russian-born economist Nonna Materkova, the foundation previously operated an exhibition space in East London until 2016 and published the Calvert Journal. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office issued a formal statement declaring the foundation's activities unwelcome within Russian territory. This designation creates security risks and potential entry restrictions for individuals associated with the organization who are in Russia. Former Calvert Journal editor Nadia Beard criticized the decision on social media, calling it 'stupid' and 'counter-productive.' The foundation was established to promote cultural exchange from Russia and former Soviet regions. Its exhibition programming was overseen by former ICA London director Ekow Eshun. Materkova was also involved with the Hermitage Foundation, a patrons' group supporting the St. Petersburg museum that ceased fundraising in July while condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Calvert Journal stopped publication immediately after Russia's invasion began, with its editorial team stating opposition to the war and prioritizing staff safety. Calvert 22 now joins 61 other non-profit organizations labeled 'undesirable' by Russian authorities since the Ukraine invasion.
