Calligraphy from Shodo to Calligrafuturism at Museo Correr

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo Correr in Venice presents 'La via della Scrittura', an exhibition exploring calligraphy through ancient manuscripts and works by six contemporary artists: Gayane Yerkanyan, Sarko Meené, Golnaz Fathi, Hassan Massoudy, Mingjun Luo, and Monica Dengo. Curated by Monica Viero, the show is part of a broader program celebrating the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo's death, linking the Silk Road to the path of writing. The exhibition traces calligraphy's evolution from its origins in the East over 3,000 years ago to modern movements like 'Calligrafuturism', founded by Pokras Lampas, which blends street art with urban styles. It also features the work of Ai Kishimoto, who reinterprets Shodo as a performance art emphasizing emotion and the mind-body connection. UNESCO inscribed Arabic calligraphy on its Intangible Heritage list in 2021. Four workshop days are scheduled for October to explore calligraphy's expressive potential across Eastern and Western cultures.
