Call for Papers: Asia through Exhibition Histories
Afterall, in partnership with Asia Art Archive, the Paul Mellon Centre, and Tate Research Centre: Asia, is organizing a session at the 2018 annual conference of the UK's Association for Art History (AAH). The conference will be hosted by the Courtauld Institute of Art and King's College London from 5 to 7 April 2018. The session, titled 'Asia through Exhibition Histories,' invites papers that examine methodological and theoretical issues in exhibiting 'Asia' and analyzing past exhibitions. It encourages reflection on how exhibition histories differ from art history and how disciplines like performance, literary, or cultural studies intersect. Topics include landmark shows in Asian art, self-organized and institutional initiatives, nationalism and transnationalism, and interdisciplinary approaches. Case studies such as 'Cities on the Move' and 'Chiang Mai Social Installation' are suggested. The call prioritizes analysis of art from the last 75 years and welcomes unconventional anchors. Abstracts of up to 250 words for 25-minute papers are due by midnight GMT on 6 November 2017, submitted to Lucy Steeds at l.steeds@afterall.org. AAH membership is required for participation.
