Caleb Thal's 'To Remember' Blends Memory and Photography

Photographer Caleb Thal, based in Los Angeles, has published a new book titled 'To Remember,' which explores the nature of memory through printed, re-photographed, and altered images. The project reimagines photographs as a way of tracing how they change long after first being seen. Thal was selected as one of the 2025 Art & Photo Book Award Winners, with support from Bookmobile helping turn his project into a book. The book draws on his childhood experiences of looking at old family photos, and he aims to encourage viewers to appreciate their own memories and slow down. Thal's process for this book involved printing photographs spanning the last decade and re-photographing them under varying conditions to create new memories. He cites his son, Mark Mahaney, and his own departure from an evangelical Christian upbringing as influences. The book is available for purchase via Booooooom.
