cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

On August 16, 1972, carabinieri divers retrieved the Riace Bronzes from the Mediterranean Sea following a report by diver Stefano Mariottini. These Greek bronze sculptures represent Magna Graecia and Calabria and have been proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. To commemorate their 50th anniversary, the Calabria Region has planned various events from July 2022 to 2023, including artistic projects, the docufilm "I Bronzi di Riace," and educational activities such as the comic initiative "La Scuola per i Bronzi." Highlights include an opera performance at Teatro Cilea and a public archaeology exhibition on Corso Garibaldi. A video mapping installation will be showcased at the Museo di Reggio Calabria on August 16, along with festivities in Riace.
