Cairo's Townhouse Gallery suffers partial building collapse, destroying library and offices

institutional · 2026-04-20

A partial collapse struck Townhouse Gallery in Cairo on 6 April, causing significant damage to the Townhouse Library, administrative offices, and a first-floor gallery extension. The neighboring Cairo Hacker Space, an open source community workspace, was completely destroyed by the incident. Staff have temporarily relocated to the gallery's Factory Space while engineers assess how to secure the remaining structure. This setback follows the 2015 closure of the space by Egyptian authorities and ongoing financial challenges, including the shutdown of Townhouse West in New Cairo due to funding withdrawal. Despite these difficulties, the gallery's Rawabet Theatre will resume operations on 16 April with a full performance schedule.
