Cai Guo-Qiang's Tokyo Retrospective Explores Cosmic Dialogues and Daytime Fireworks

exhibition · 2026-04-20

In June, the National Art Center, Tokyo (NACT) unveiled Cai Guo-Qiang's retrospective exhibition titled 'Ramble in the Cosmos – From Primeval Fireball Onward,' in collaboration with Saint Laurent. A highlight of the event was the debut of 'When the Sky Blooms with Sakura,' a daytime firework display commissioned by Anthony Vaccarello of Saint Laurent, representing Japan's inaugural daytime fireworks. The exhibition charts Cai's artistic journey from his beginnings in China to his experiences in Japan (1986-1994) and the United States, beginning with his 1991 showcase 'Primeval Fireball.' It features new gunpowder artworks and delves into cultural identity and societal themes. The exhibition is open until 21 August.
