Cai Guo-Qiang Documentary at Prado Museum

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Prado Museum in Madrid has released a documentary titled 'Lo spirito della pittura' (The Spirit of Painting) about Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, the first living artist invited to create a series of works at the museum. Directed by acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Isabel Coixet, the 50-minute 4K film follows Cai over two years, capturing his creative process in his New York studio and at the Prado's Salón del Reinos, as well as his visits to the museum's galleries and the city of Toledo in search of inspiration from masters like Rubens, Goya, El Greco, and Velázquez. The documentary premieres on Spanish pay-TV channel Movistar Extra on January 29 at 10 PM, with a 20-minute excerpt already on view in Room D of the Prado since October. Starting in February, the DVD will be sold at the museum's bookshop. Coixet produced the film through her company Miss Wasabi Film, with sponsorship from Samsung The Frame and participation from Movistar+. The score is by Spanish composer Remate, and the Spanish voiceover is by actor Luis Homar. The documentary coincides with the exhibition 'Lo spirito della pittura,' running until March 4 at the Prado.
