Cai Guo-Qiang and Richard Serra Exhibitions in Doha

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In Qatar, cultural policy is directed by the state, contrasting with Abu Dhabi's approach. Last year, MAHTAF was established as a museum dedicated to modern and contemporary Arab art within Education City. Currently, its permanent collection is on hold for "Saraab," a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang that draws inspiration from both Qatari and Chinese cultures. The exhibition features seventeen monumental pieces, including "Imitation of a Nautical Chart," which illustrates a fictional journey from Doha to Quanzhou, with local residents assisting in the creation of the artworks. Sheikha Al Mayassa inaugurated a park near the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), which showcases Richard Serra's "7," a towering structure standing twenty-four meters tall. The National Museum of Qatar, designed by Jean Nouvel, is set to open in 2013.
