Cagliari exhibition explores Pinuccio Sciola's nature-inspired sculpture

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Castello San Michele in Cagliari hosts 'Sciola. Madre Pietra la natura la scultura', a posthumous exhibition curated by Simona Campus and Tiziana Ciocca, five years after the artist's death. The show examines Sciola's relationship between art and nature, his social engagement, and his ties to the city. Outside the castle, an installation of iron tubes pays homage to Antoni Gaudí. Inside, works include 'Canne' honoring Nobel laureate Grazia Deledda, 'Semi di Pace' (basalt seed sculptures on earth), and 'Spighe e Foglie' similar to pieces shown at Jardin de Luxembourg (2004) and Basilica inferiore di Assisi (2008). The exhibition features his famous 'Pietre Sonore' (sonorous stones) in basalt and limestone, including one played like a harp before Michelangelo's Moses in San Pietro in Vincoli shortly before his death. Upper floors highlight environmentalist themes in 'Bagnanti', 'Vele', and constructivist works. Numerous drawings, sketches, and photographic documentation of his murals in San Sperate and Cagliari are also displayed, including a large 1995 painting on wood and a lost 1986 mural for Piazza Repubblica.
