Caffè Doria reopens as bistrot and cocktail bar in Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, Rome

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Caffè Doria, originally opened in 1999 within Palazzo Doria Pamphilj in Rome, has undergone a renovation from August 2019 to February 2020, transforming from a tea room and café into a bistrot and cocktail bar. The project was led by the Bianchi family, the founders. The space, once noble stables, features a 17th-century monumental fountain, six-meter ceilings, columns, vaults, and arches. Furnishings from CIAM include a bar counter, pastry counter, and drink trolley. A restored solid wood boiserie frames rotating art exhibitions; currently showing "Le Mostre Impossibili" curated by Prof. Renato Parascandolo, featuring high-definition backlit reproductions of major Italian art works. The kitchen is headed by chef Massimiliano Mazzotta (born 1987), who offers dishes like millefoglie di vitello tonnato, alici alla beccafico in orange sauce, potato gnocchi with escarole cream and smoked provola fondue, and lamb fillet with vegetables. The café is located at Via della Gatta 1/a and accessible from inside the gallery. Palazzo Doria Pamphilj houses a modern art collection from the 16th century by the Doria, Pamphilj, Landi, and Aldobrandini families, including works by Tintoretto, Titian, Raphael, Carracci, Correggio, Caravaggio, Filippo Lippi, Lorrain, and Velásquez.
