Cadiz Museum Closed for Eight Years with No Reopening Date

The Provincial Museum of Cadiz in southern Spain has been partially closed since 2018, with no reopening date in sight. The building, originally a Franciscan convent, houses both the museum and the Provincial Academy of Fine Arts of Cadiz. Administrative disputes among the regional government, the Ministry of Culture, and the municipality have stalled repairs. The academy's collection, accumulated over 238 years through mandatory deposits by new members, remains packed in crates, including plaster casts from the 18th century, period furniture, a 19th-century library, ceiling paintings by Alejandrina Gessler (Anselma), and about fifty avant-garde works from 1966 honoring poet Rafael Alberti. The library, built without metal fixings and anchored in masonry, is considered immovable. The Ministry of Culture has invested €735,000 in roof repairs and plans to renovate the Casa Pinillos as an extension, but the overall rehabilitation of the degraded wing lacks a timeline. Academy president Pablo Juliá has alerted Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun without concrete commitment. The academy now operates from a municipal loaned space since 2024, and access to the old premises requires a hard hat. Juliá plans to seek support from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid.
