Ca' Santa Marta in Milan to Reopen in 2026 After Restoration

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

Ca' Santa Marta, a historic residential building in Milan's Cinque Vie district, will reopen in 2026 following a conservative restoration that began in 2024. The project, led by R4M Engineering and marketed by Abitare Co., merges two adjacent properties on Via Santa Marta and Via San Maurilio. The original core dates to the 15th century, with expansions in the 18th century. The building spans approximately 2,700 square meters around two internal courtyards, one of which houses archaeological finds. During preliminary investigations, frescoes, decorative fragments, and Roman columns were discovered. The restoration follows a principle of "harmonious dialogue between past and present." The building will contain 23 residential units ranging from studios to four-bedroom apartments with terraces, featuring modern amenities like home automation and high-efficiency systems integrated within heritage constraints. Each apartment is named after historical figures such as Leonardo, Manzoni, Verdi, and Caravaggio. The Cinque Vie district, one of Milan's oldest, was a commercial hub since Roman and medieval times and is known for its galleries, ateliers, and boutiques.
