C. Michael Norton's Infinity's Sprawl Exhibition at UNIX Gallery Explores Chance and Order

On October 26, 2017, UNIX Gallery in New York City unveiled C. Michael Norton's exhibition, Infinity's Sprawl, which will be on display until December 09. The showcase highlighted pieces such as Sampling Time (2016-17), illustrating Norton's distinctive painting technique. His method starts with a clear medium spread over the canvas, allowing random brushstroke patterns to shape the composition. Drawing from his experience as both a fine artist and commercial house painter, Norton utilizes 'holidays'—imperfections that disrupt flawless surfaces. Canvases are often laid flat to capture stray paint and studio debris, adding unintentional marks. Once he responds to the developing composition, the canvas is moved to the wall, where he safeguards the untouched areas. The exhibition's catalog features essays by Eleanor Heartney, Stephen Westfall, Raphael Rubinstein, and David Cohen, who noted Norton's ability to create pockets of chance within a carefully structured framework. An opening reception took place on October 26 from 6-8 PM at 532 West 24th Street.
