BUZZ Architects' Prairie Ark and Nomads' Beacon Tower on Ulanqab Grassland

architecture-design · 2026-06-01

BUZZ/ Büro Ziyu Zhuang has completed two buildings on the Ulanqab Grassland in Inner Mongolia, China, designed as an exhibition center for the Xinghe County Laolihai Tourism Professional Cooperative. The 1,360 m² project, completed in 2025, consists of a horizontal embedded structure and a vertical suspended tower, creating a formal contrast that frames the site. The design addresses the challenge of building on traditionally nomadic terrain without resorting to symbolic copying or imported urban language, aiming for visual legibility at a distance while being absorbed into the landscape. Principal designers include Ziyu Zhuang, Na Li, Zhongqi Ren, and Fabian Wieser. The project was curated by HAN Shuang and photographed by Shengliang Su.
