Burri and Nunzio's Black Dialogues at Mazzoleni Milan
Mazzoleni opens its new Milan space with 'Nero x Nero', a two-artist exhibition pairing Alberto Burri (1915–1995) with contemporary artist Nunzio (b. 1954). Curated by Bruno Corà, president of the Fondazione Burri, the show explores black as a conceptual and material ground. Burri's works include 'Catrame 1' (1948), 'Nero Cretto' (1970), and 'Nero e Oro' (1993), the latter inspired by Ravenna mosaic tradition. Nunzio presents 'Avvoltoio' (2019) and a new site-specific piece. Both artists use fire as a transformative process: Burri's 'Plastiche' series exploits fire's destructive and generative potential, while Nunzio's combustion of wood and lead acts as a purifying bath. The gallery has represented Burri for 39 years, with monographic shows in 2004, 2012, and 2015 between Turin and London; Nunzio had two solo exhibitions at the London branch in 2019 and 2023. Corà's text frames the dialogue as a shared attention to form as an ethical entity confronting time.
