Burrell Collection Wins Art Fund Museum of the Year 2023
The Art Fund Museum of the Year 2023 has been awarded to the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, which comes with a prize of £120,000, the largest of its kind worldwide. The accolade was given by artist Grayson Perry during a ceremony held at the British Museum in London. Situated in Pollok Country Park, the museum features a collection of 9,000 items amassed by Sir William and Constance Burrell. Following a significant renovation by John McAslan + Partners, it reopened in October 2022 and has drawn over 500,000 visitors since. The collection includes medieval, Islamic, Chinese, and Egyptian decorative arts, along with pieces by Rembrandt and Degas. Jenny Waldman, director of the Art Fund, commended the museum for its exceptional collection and community engagement. Other contenders—Leighton House (London), The MAC (Belfast), Natural History Museum (London), and Scapa Flow Museum (Orkney)—each received £15,000. The judging panel comprised artist Larry Achiampong, historian Mary Beard, author Abadesi Osunsade, and Laura Pye from National Museums Liverpool.
