Burhan Ozbilici wins World Press Photo 2017 for assassination image

Turkish photographer Burhan Ozbilici of Associated Press won the World Press Photo of the Year 2017 for his image "An Assassination in Turkey," capturing the moment Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş assassinated Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov at an art exhibition opening in Ankara on December 19, 2016. The image was selected from 80,408 entries by 5,034 photographers from 125 countries. Ozbilici also won first prize in the Spot News Stories category. The competition awarded photographers from 25 countries across eight categories. Among the winners were four Italians: Francesco Comello (third place, Daily Life – Stories), Alessio Romenzi (third place, General News – Stories), Giovanni Capriotti (first place, Sports – Stories), and Antonio Gibotta (third place, People – Stories). Other notable winners included Jonathan Bachman's "A Stand In Baton Rouge" (first place, Contemporary Issues), Vadim Ghirda's "Migrant Crossing," and Daniel Etter's "The Libyan Migrant Trap." Daniel Berehulak's reportage "They Are Slaughtering Us Like Animals" documented the Philippines' drug war.
