Buonanotte Contemporanea Revives Abandoned Italian Village with Site-Specific Art

exhibition · 2026-04-27

In the abandoned hamlet of Buonanotte, part of Montebello sul Sangro in Abruzzo, the interdisciplinary project Buonanotte Contemporanea launched on September 3, 2020, featuring site-specific installations by artists Jasmine Pignatelli, Vincenzo Marsiglia, and Artan Shalsi. Conceived by architect Carmela Palmieri of CASaA ARCHITETTI alongside Fabio Armillotta and N. Marco Santomauro, the initiative aims to creatively recover and secure the historic village, which has been deserted since landslides began in the 1960s. Curator Maria Letizia Paiato emphasized that the project avoids decorative interventions, instead selecting artists whose practices inherently engage with construction and architecture. The works—Artan Shalsi's stainless steel Senza titolo, Vincenzo Marsiglia's Kaleidoscope, and Jasmine Pignatelli's A Broken Line—are designed to be organic to the village's identity, described by Palmieri as 'removing a veil from the village.' Local craftsmanship was employed to foster a sense of territorial belonging. A docu-backstage by Francesco Castellani documents the process, highlighting how the project restores not only the urban fabric but also social cohesion. The local government plans to develop sustainable tourism services around the initiative.
