Bundeskunsthalle Bonn Examines History of Sex Work in New Exhibition

The Bundeskunsthalle Bonn presents 'Sex Work. Eine Kulturgeschichte der Sexarbeit', a major cultural-historical exhibition tracing representations of sex work from antiquity to contemporary activism. The show features artworks, photographs, historical objects, and documents spanning over two millennia, from ancient vases to Toulouse-Lautrec's Parisian brothel scenes, Otto Dix's cityscapes, and modern photography. Developed in collaboration with a collective of researching sex workers, the exhibition centers the perspectives of those historically spoken about, incorporating personal objects from the 'Objects of Desire' archive alongside art historical works. The exhibition explores how sex work has been depicted in relation to seduction, misery, freedom, and social mobility, and how it intersects with questions of morality, religion, gender roles, and power.
