Bullshit Museum in Ljubljana Celebrates Balkan Humor

In Ljubljana, Slovenia, a new museum dedicated to the humor of the former Yugoslavia has opened. The Bullshit Museum, launched in May, features five rooms with mannequins, AI-generated images, and jokes that explore the region's shared culture. The museum's founder, Borut Kokelj, has collected about 25,000 jokes, but the exhibition deliberately avoids politically loaded or ethnic-specific humor. Instead, it focuses on everyday absurdities, relationships, and the concept of 'yebiga' (roughly 'fuck it'), which Kokelj describes as the essence of Balkan humor. The museum is located in the historic Old Town, where a mannequin with a bucket on its head greets visitors. Rakija, a Balkan fruit brandy, is served to visitors and is described as 'the first aid of every Balkan household.' The museum highlights how humor may have held Yugoslavia together, with jokes playing on language differences (Cyrillic vs. Latin alphabets) and references to the region's conflicts, such as a wordplay on the Serbian film 'Lepa Sela Lepo Gore.' The exhibition also touches on gender roles and the ability to laugh at oneself. Kokelj notes that exhibiting all truly 'Balkan' jokes would have been impossible due to their sensitive nature.
