Bulgarian Feminist Art Group 'The 8th of March' Stages 'SHOP-ART' Exhibition in Sofia Underpass
From June 20-24, 2001, Sofia's underpass connecting the Central Universal Shop and the Sheraton Hotel hosted the exhibition-project 'Women on the Market' (also known as 'SHOP-ART'), presented by the Bulgarian women's art collective 'The 8th of March.' Established in 1997 as a reaction to the all-male 'Erotica' exhibition, the collective has organized eight exhibitions along with various initiatives. The artists addressed the commercialization of women through diverse works, including Daniela Kostova's pop-folk posters, Alla Georgieva's self-defense gas flask, Tania Abadjieva's poetic video, Boriana Dragoeva's cartoon, and Sylvia Lazarova's photograph of Roma women. The group thrives on curiosity and camaraderie, navigating a socio-cultural landscape that often resists such expressions.
