Bugarin + Castle to Represent Scotland at 2026 Venice Biennale with 'Shame Parade'

exhibition · 2026-03-15

The 61st Venice Biennale, scheduled from 9 May to 22 November 2026, will feature the artistic duo Bugarin + Castle, who will represent Scotland. Their exhibition, 'Shame Parade,' curated by Mount Stuart Trust, will take place at Olivolo, Castello. This work investigates charivari, medieval rituals of public shaming that employed sound and costumes, including cross-dressing to ridicule offenders. Filipino artist Davide Bugarin highlights that 'charivari' is recognized in modern Philippine law as a punishable public disturbance. The exhibition blends sound, music, sculpture, print, and a musical score from Manila's Kalye Teresa, including a 5-channel video titled 'Submit to Sound' (2026). Castle stressed the importance of complexity in narratives, especially concerning trans rights. Bugarin remarked that the Biennale embraces unresolved themes, while Castle paid tribute to Scottish musician Sophie. The duo co-founded Pollyanna, a queer arts collective in Scotland.
