Buffalo Trace Releases Record 30-Year Eagle Rare Bourbon in Limited $12,500 Decanter
Buffalo Trace Distillery has launched Eagle Rare 30, its oldest bourbon ever produced, priced at $12,500 in a hand-blown decanter with custom display case. Critic Jonah Flicker, writing for Robb Report, praised the ultra-aged whiskey despite his previous disappointment with the 2023 Eagle Rare 25 release. The 30-year expression underwent initial maturation in standard Kentucky warehouses before transfer to climate-controlled Warehouse P, where temperature and humidity were regulated to simulate Scottish, Irish, or northern Japanese conditions. This process yielded a bourbon with softer fruit, spice, vanilla, tobacco, leather, and toasted wood notes, avoiding the bitter, tannic character Flicker found in the 25-year version. Bottled at 101 proof, the whiskey will be available at auction through Bonhams from April 24 to May 8. Future releases may include a 15-year expression and potentially even older bourbons. Other ultra-aged American whiskeys mentioned include Michter's 25 and Celebration Sour Mash, while Blade and Bow, Redemption, and I.W. Harper offerings over 30 years were noted as less successful.
