Bucharest Biennale BB4 Explores Urban Chaos and Communist Memory Through International Art
The Fourth International Biennale of Contemporary Art, named 'Handlung – On Producing Possibilities,' took place in Bucharest from May 21 to July 25, 2010. Curator Felix Vogel employed the concept of 'Handlung' to delve into various narratives. A total of thirty-seven artists contributed, which is notably fewer than at larger biennales. The exhibited works highlighted urban challenges in Bucharest, such as architectural decay and the legacy of communism. The event was hosted across five venues, beginning at the Museum of Geology, where Vogel's installation referenced Marcel Iancu's historical writings. At the Institute for Political Research, artists like Kalle Brolin and Pablo Bronstein addressed societal concerns. The Center for Visual Introspection critiqued consumerism, while the Otolith Group showcased videos at Paradis Garaj. The biennale wrapped up at the Center for Contemporary Art, Pavilion Unicredit, with a review by Valentina Iancu for ARTMargins Online.
