Bruno Serralongue's Slow Photography at B.A.C. Geneva

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Bruno Serralongue's exhibition 'Backdraft' at the B.A.C. in Geneva (February 2 to April 1, 2007) showcases his unique photographic practice using a large-format camera with consistent technical parameters: the same camera, film, and wide-angle lens, without filters or added light. Working without assistants or prior scouting, Serralongue maintains reportage conditions while paradoxically slowing down the instantaneity typical of photography through the long exposure required by his device. The exhibition presents a sober hang with a restricted selection, highlighting two figures of the artist: as an independent reporter and as a public photographer. Key series include 'Jornal do Brasil, 1999-2000', created while employed by a daily newspaper; 'Sommet mondial sur la société de l'information, 16-18 novembre 2005', shot at the periphery of a UN summit without press accreditation; 'Luna Park (Bilbao)', depicting a dilapidated amusement park used by Basque police for dog training, contrasting with Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum; 'Sunday Afternoon', referencing itinerant portrait photographers in city parks; and 'Les Manifestations (1995)', 690 photographs of social protests against the Juppé government, projected for a duration equal to their exposure time. The exhibition title 'Backdraft' refers to invisible combustion that can lead to explosion, applying to both the images' quality and content. Curated by Christophe Kihm.
