Bruno Marrapodi's video animation for Manifesta 12 in Palermo
Bruno Marrapodi (born 1982, Milan) created the video work "Suona anche il Jazz" for the Crypt of Santa Maria del Piliere in Palermo, on the occasion of Manifesta 12, the nomadic European Biennial held in Sicily in 2018. The video constructs an ancestral landscape blending Norman and Moorish architecture with underground prisons and secret passages, assembled like a medieval tapestry fortress surrounded by sky and sea. A specially composed jazz soundtrack accompanies the slow-moving images, telling a story of a universal passage from darkness to light and back. The work is one of three chapters in Marrapodi's recent research, marking his shift from painting to animated video. He reinterprets and updates passages from modern Western literature (Buzzati, Camus, Ellroy, Genet) to explore the contemporary wandering spirit.
