Bruno Marrapodi's Poetic Video Inspired by Simenon's Novel

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Bruno Marrapodi created a two-and-a-half-minute video, 'Some Weird Sins,' as part of a residency at Espronceda Institute of Art & Culture in November 2018. The residency, curated by Valentina Casacchia, brought together artists including Annika Larsson and Alice Guareschi to engage with Georges Simenon's 1948 novel 'La neige était sale' (The Snow Was Dirty), exploring how visual arts can confront literature. The project culminated in a show during the Loop festival in Barcelona in November 2019. Marrapodi's video features buildings reminiscent of Philip Guston's creatures and Hayao Miyazaki's Totoro, with a guitar soundtrack possibly evoking Bill Frisell. The novel was significant for Simenon's breakthrough in England, and its French translation was done by the wife of composer Edgar Varèse.
