Bruno Latour's Post-Pandemic Philosophical Guide 'Where Am I?' Published in Italian

publication · 2026-04-27

Italian translation of Bruno Latour's 'Where Am I? Lessons in Philosophy for a Changing Planet' has been released by Einaudi. The book, originally published in French, offers a philosophical compass for navigating the profound planetary shifts triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Latour begins with the deeply personal and philosophical question 'Where am I?', which expands into a universal, planetary inquiry encompassing humans and non-humans. He argues that the pandemic has created a 'ground zero' where boundaries become indistinguishable, and GPS can no longer locate anything. Humans and non-humans—viruses, bacteria, technologies, objects—form complex hybrid relationships demanding new alliances in thought and action. Latour reinterprets Franz Kafka's 'The Metamorphosis' in reverse: Gregor Samsa's insect condition becomes an archetype of necessary metamorphosis, not isolation. The insect-being helps situate ecological thinking that challenges economic reason. Latour contends that the pandemic momentarily freed confined minds from the 'iron cage' of economic laws, revealing that nothing on Earth is purely natural—everything has been shaped by agents pursuing specific purposes. The book was reviewed in Artribune Magazine #68 by Marco Petroni, a design theorist and critic. The Italian edition is translated by Simona Mambrini, 184 pages, €15, ISBN 9788806251215.
