Brunk Auctions to sell museum deaccessions and rare Peale portrait in May
On May 20-21, Brunk Auctions will conduct its Premier auctions featuring American, Southern, British, and Continental items, following a successful deaccession auction from the Brooklyn Museum that garnered $1.3 million. Among the standout pieces is a rare portrait of Colonel Nicholas Rogers, a Maryland Revolutionary War figure, created by Charles Willson Peale, with an estimated value of $80,000-120,000. Peale, renowned as a prominent 18th-century American artist, is noted for having portrayed George Washington from life more than any other painter. Colonel Rogers was connected to Martha Custis Washington through marriage, served as Aide-de-Camp to Generals DuCoudray and de Kalb, and constructed the historic Druid Hill home in Baltimore.
