Bruges Triennale 2018: Liquid City Explores Urban Utopia

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The second edition of the Triennale Brugge, titled 'Liquid City', runs until September 16, 2018, in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bruges, Belgium. Curated by Michel Dewilde and Till-Holger Borchert, the event features artists, architects, theorists, and scientists across three sections: 'Inviting and Hospitable Public Spaces', '(Co-)creative Associations', and 'The Imagined City'. Participants include Jarosław Kozakiewicz, Wesley Meuris, Renato Nicolodi, Kunlé Adeyemi, Obba, Roxy Paine, John Powers, Raumlabor, Rotor (with Beaufort2018), Ruimteveldwerk, Tomás Saraceno, Selgascano, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Studiokca, and Peter Van Driessche-Atelier4. The Frac Centre-Val de Loire, curated by Abdelkader Damani, presents a show in the Grootseminarie church and gardens. Projects include a futuristic bridge leading nowhere, a floating platform for swimming in a cleaned canal, a giant circular net, a temporary school, a time house for youth, and a whale sculpture made from recycled plastic. Dewilde emphasizes positive responses to ecological and social crises, such as cooking invasive Chinese crabs and engaging refugees. The triennale aims to inspire a new relationship between city and nature, reusing empty buildings rather than constructing new ones.
