Bruce Conner Retrospective at Reina Sofía Explores a Maverick American Artist
The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid presents 'Bruce Conner. It’s All True', a comprehensive retrospective of the American artist (1933–2008). The exhibition, curated by Stuart Comer, Laura Hoptman, Rudolf Frieling, Gary Garrels, and Rachel Federman, features over 250 works on paper, films, paintings, and sculptures. Conner, active in San Francisco since the 1950s and associated with the Beat Generation, is recognized as a pioneer of installations and readymades, and an underground video artist. His work spans assemblage, film, drawing, collage, and performance, often addressing American society, politics, mass media, and consumerism. Notable works include 'Child' (1959), 'The Bride' (1960), 'Report' (1963–67) on the Kennedy assassination, and 'Crossroads' (1976) with atomic bomb footage. Conner also photographed punk bands for 'Search and Destroy' and created collages influenced by Max Ernst. The show runs until May 22, 2017.
