Brooklyn Museum to Stage Pierre Cardin Retrospective on Moon Landing Anniversary
The Brooklyn Museum in New York will open "Pierre Cardin: Future Fashion" on July 20, 2019, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The exhibition spans seven decades of Cardin's career, featuring 170 objects from the 1950s to today, including haute couture and prêt-à-porter garments, accessories, photographs, films, and archival materials. Cardin, born in 1922 in Sant'Andrea di Barbarana, Italy, and naturalized French, was a pioneer of Space Age fashion and futuristic design, influenced by the Space Race and new technologies. His geometric silhouettes and unconventional materials were worn by stars such as Brigitte Bardot, Lauren Bacall, Alain Delon, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Raquel Welch. Cardin was also among the first European designers to present collections in Japan, China, and Vietnam, and he licensed his name globally across a wide range of products. The exhibition runs through January 5, 2020.
