Broken Music Vol. 2: 700 Vinyl Records in Berlin Exhibition

The Hamburger Bahnhof museum in Berlin presents 'Broken Music Vol. 2: 70 Years of Records and Sound Works by Artists,' curated by Sven Beckstette and Ingrid Buschmann. The exhibition features over 700 vinyl records organized into ten sections, tracing the development of the medium from post-war to the present across multiple musical fields and its creative influence on artists. It draws from the collection of Ursula Block, who owned the iconic record store Gelbe Musik in Berlin's Wilmersdorf district from 1981 to 2014. The store was a meeting place for artists and musicians such as John Cage, Yoko Ono, Sonic Youth, and Björk, blending avant-garde music and art through record sales, exhibitions of scores and sound sculptures. A notable event was 'Extended Play' (1988), co-curated with Christian Marclay. The exhibition's title references a Fluxus album by Milan Knížák. The show includes works from the museum's collection and pieces acquired from Block with support from the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung and Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung. Featured artists include Christina Kubisch, Susan Philipsz, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Anne Imhof, Jimmie Durham, and Lawrence Weiner. The exhibition runs until May 14, 2023, at the Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart.
