British Pavilion at Venice Architecture Biennale explores diasporic rituals shaping urban spaces
At the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, the British Pavilion showcases 'Dancing Before the Moon,' under the curation of Jayden Ali, Joseph Henry, Meneesha Kellay, and Sumitra Upham. This exhibition delves into the influence of Britain's diasporic communities on modern life, particularly through practices like dance and worship. Among its highlights are six significant sculptures, such as a three-metre-tall aluminium monolith by Madhav Kidao and a seven-metre-long blue soap tableau by Sandra Poulson. Additionally, a film merges archive footage from the British Film Institute with contemporary UK visuals, focusing on rituals of Black and Brown individuals. Jayden Ali's eight-metre-long installation, 'Thunder & Şimşek,' draws inspiration from Trinidadian and Turkish-Cypriot customs. The exhibition continues throughout the biennale, promoting the acknowledgment of non-eurocentric rituals.
