British Museum asks public to help recover stolen artifacts

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The British Museum has launched a public appeal to recover hundreds of missing artifacts, many suspected stolen by a former employee who was fired a month ago. The museum's director, Hartwig Fischer, resigned in August amid the scandal. As of September 26, the museum reported recovering 60 objects and expects 300 more, but the total number missing remains unclear. Board chair George Osborne suggested around 2,000 items are unaccounted for. The museum's new webpage displays only a few items, including a Roman gold ring and bracelet (3rd century AD) and a Hellenistic oval with an inlaid warrior. The sparse information is intentional, advised by Art Loss Register specialists to prevent destruction or illegal sale of the artifacts. The museum is also monitoring the art market, cooperating with police, and working with specialists to identify stolen goods. A dedicated email address ([email protected]) collects anonymous tips.
