British artist Alastair Mackinven dies at 53, known for cross-disciplinary practice and late-career painting focus
Alastair Mackinven, a British artist, musician, and educator, passed away at the age of fifty-three following a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his gallery, Maureen Paley. Born in 1971 in Clatterbridge, he obtained a BFA from Alberta College of Art in 1994 and an MFA from Goldsmiths in 1996. His artistic repertoire included figurative painting, film sculpture, and performance art, often infused with critical commentary. A memorable 2008 performance at Camden Arts Centre involved him gluing his hand to the floor to gauge staff reaction times. His latest works, showcased in the solo exhibition Dlnrg [oeeey] at Reena Spaulings Fine Art, featured a distinctive surface created with oxidized iron powder.
