British Analytical Painter David Leverett Dies of Coronavirus at 82
British artist David Leverett, associated with the Analytical Painting movement, died of COVID-19 on April 20, 2020, in a London hospital. The news was kept private and communicated to Italy by Verona-based gallery Studio la Città, his historic Italian hub, through his wife Mary Boyarski. Due to UK coronavirus restrictions, a strictly private funeral will be held on May 6. Born in Nottingham in 1938, Leverett studied at Nottingham College of Art (1957-61) and the Royal Academy in London (1961-64). Before his debut solo show in London in 1966, he worked as a designer and set designer. His paintings are characterized by intense, dynamic color use that evokes musical notes, employing synesthesia to expand contemporary art's conceptual boundaries. He had a long-standing relationship with Italy, holding his first solo show at Studio la Città in 1971. He participated in the notable exhibition "Empirica" curated by Giorgio Cortenova in 1975, first at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Verona and then in Rimini. The Tate holds 29 of his works in its permanent collection. Hélène de Franchis, owner of Studio la Città and a friend for half a century, paid tribute, recalling him as an innovative artist with uncommon aesthetic sense and a generous poet. She shared a poem by Leverett from 1975 as a final gesture.
