Brigitte Fassbaender directs Wozzeck at Theater Lübeck with Bo Skovhus

Theater Lübeck presents Alban Berg's opera "Wozzeck" in a new production directed by Brigitte Fassbaender, starring baritone Bo Skovhus in the title role. The production runs from May to June 2026 at the Großes Haus. Stefan Vladar conducts the Philharmonisches Orchester der Hansestadt Lübeck. The staging features sets and costumes by Bettina Munzer, lighting by Falk Hempel, and choruses led by Jan-Michael Krüger and Gudrun Schröder. The cast includes Adrienn Miksch as Marie, Roman Payer as the Tambourmajor, Peter Lodahl as the Hauptmann, Changjun Lee as the Doktor, and Thomas Stückemann as the Narr. The production is supported by a €15,000 donation from the Lübecker Theaterstiftung. Fassbaender's interpretation emphasizes Wozzeck as an intelligent man driven to despair by his surroundings. The opera is based on Georg Büchner's fragmentary drama "Woyzeck" (1836/37). Berg composed the libretto himself with minimal changes. The premiere audience responded with enthusiasm, though applause started hesitantly due to the absence of a closing curtain. A supplementary program includes the 7th symphony concert on May 3-4 featuring Alexander von Zemlinsky's "Lyrische Sinfonie" with Skovhus and Miksch.
