Brice Dellsperger's Body Double Series at Galerie Air de Paris
Brice Dellsperger (b. 1972, lives and works in Paris) presented Body Double 22 and Body Double 23 at Galerie Air de Paris from February 20 to March 20, 2010. Since his first Body Double in 1995, Dellsperger has reenacted selected film sequences by directors Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, and Gus Van Sant, adhering closely to original framing while using amateur actors. Body Double 22 adapts key scenes from Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, with Jean-Luc Verna performing all roles (as in BD X in 2000 and BD 16 in 2003). The work explores identity through cross-dressing, wigs, costumes, and makeup, blurring gender and referencing Aristophanes' concept of the androgyne. Dellsperger aims to "reveal the feminine sensitivity embodied by male roles," creating a denser psychological substrate. The temporal loop structure disrupts Kubrick's chronology, and musical distortions produce an original soundtrack. Body Double 23 (2007) reenacts casting scenes from De Palma's The Black Dahlia, with Eva Svennung playing Elisabeth Short, her body painted with future mutilations. The exhibition also featured costumes made after original models and attention to decor.
