Brian Clarke's monumental stained glass 'Concordia' installed at Bahrain Airport

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

British artist Brian Clarke has completed 'Concordia', one of the world's largest stained glass artworks, installed last week at Bahrain International Airport. Spanning approximately 600 square meters, the work comprises 127 handcrafted panels, each weighing about 250 kg, for a total weight of 32 tons. The glass was mouth-blown in Germany by five artisans. The project took two and a half years and involved a team of 21 people. 'Concordia' blends Eastern and Western cultural symbols—including Islamic geometric motifs observed by Clarke in Fez, Morocco, alongside jasmine flowers, dragonflies, and falcons from Bahraini landscapes, as well as elements from medieval European tapestries and illuminated manuscripts. The artwork is intended to celebrate shared beauty and cultural interconnection, with its airport location emphasizing a message of global community. Clarke stated that the piece unites the two parts of the world he comes from and expresses everything he has learned about stained glass.
