Brett Rogers Steps Down as Director of London's Photographers' Gallery After 16 Years

institutional · 2026-04-20

Brett Rogers has resigned as director of The Photographers' Gallery in London following a 16-year tenure. During her leadership, the gallery relocated in 2012 to its current five-floor building near Oxford Street. This year saw the launch of the Soho Photography Quarter, featuring a biannual program that displays photographic works in neighborhood streets. Under Rogers, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize winners included Cao Fei (2021), Mohamed Bourouissa (2020), Susan Meiselas (2019), Richard Mosse (2014), and Walid Raad (2007). The 2022 prize was awarded to American artist Deana Lawson, who received £30,000. Rogers succeeded founding director Sue Davies, who held the position from 1971 to 1991. In a statement, Rogers reflected on photography's evolution from marginal to mainstream status over three decades, crediting the gallery with advancing recognition of the medium and technology's role in visual culture. The gallery plans to name a new director by December 2022.
