Brescia's SubBrixia Metro Art and Venice Architecture Biennale Highlights
The 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, directed by Alejandro Aravena, features the collateral event 'The Forest of Venice' at the Serra dei Giardini, an installation by Kjellander + Sjöberg Arkitektkontor curated by Jan Åman, using wood as a regenerative material against sea-level rise. At Casa dei Tre Oci, 'White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes' showcases over 200 photographs by Helmut Newton, curated by Matthias Harder and Denis Curti in collaboration with the Helmut Newton Foundation and June Newton, focusing on his first three books from the late 1970s. The JW Marriott on Isola delle Rose, redesigned by Matteo Thun, includes the Dopolavoro restaurant by chef Giancarlo Perbellini. In Brescia, the SubBrixia project concludes with Patrick Tuttofuoco's installation at San Faustino metro station, joining works by Rä di Martino, Marcello Maloberti, Francesco Fonassi, and Elisabetta Benassi at other stations; these temporary works remain until end of 2016, with a 2017 edition planned. The city's Roman heritage includes the 1st-century BC republican sanctuary with frescoes comparable to Pompeii, further opened to the public in spring 2015, and the Roman Theatre, 86 meters wide, once seating 15,000 spectators.
