Brent Council awards £1 million to bolster local arts initiatives and launch music biennial
The London Borough of Brent has allocated a £1 million grant to support its arts scene, building on the legacy of Brent 2020, London Borough of Culture. This funding will establish free studio spaces for 14 visual artists residing in the borough, facilitated through partnerships with Camden Art Centre and The Showroom. Additionally, the grant will finance the inaugural Brent Music Biennial in 2023 and create The Local Cultural Education Partnership (LCEP), which will unite arts organizations, youth charities, artists, and educators to enhance arts access in Brent schools. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan emphasized that culture fosters community cohesion and youth opportunities, noting its role in London's post-pandemic recovery. The first Brent Biennial in 2020, impacted by the pandemic, featured over 1,000 artists and 23 new commissions through adapted formats like podcasts, virtual festivals, and public installations. This investment aims to sustain grassroots creativity and inspire future generations across the borough.
