Brenda Zlamany's 'The Itinerant Portraitist' Exhibition at Re Institute Features 500 Global Portraits
Brenda Zlamany's showcase, 'The Itinerant Portraitist,' is on display at the Re Institute in Millerton, New York, from July 10 to September 18, 2021. This collection comprises 500 portraits, crafted over ten years across more than a dozen countries, beginning with a Fulbright grant in Taiwan in 2011. Zlamany employs a camera lucida to outline her subjects before painting watercolor portraits in one-hour sessions. Her subjects range from indigenous individuals in Alaska and Saudi Arabia to Cuban taxi drivers and Holocaust survivors. The exhibition categorizes the portraits by their predominant colors and features '100/100:' end-of-life portraits. During the pandemic, Zlamany produced masked portraits, including 85 from Williamsburg. The entrance showcases Noura, while the exit presents Julie Torres wearing a 'Pussy Power' shirt.
