Breaking Forecast: Mapping China's Young Art Scene at UCCA
Bernard Marcadé's recent journey to China shed light on the disjointed emerging art landscape, particularly through the exhibition 'Breaking Forecast: Eight Key Figures of the New Generation of Chinese Artists' at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing, which is open until February 28, 2010. Curated by Jérôme Sans and Guo Xiaoyan, the show showcases eight artists under the age of 40: Chu Yun, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, Cao Fei, Zheng Guogu, Liu Wei, Xu Zhen (known as MadeIn), Qiu Zhijie, and Yang Fudong. Highlights include Chu Yun's 'Make a Great Work' and Yang Fudong's 'Dawn Mist, Separation Faith.' Marcadé also explored the 798 Art District, likening it to Soho in the 1970s while contemplating the interplay of liberalism and authoritarianism in Chinese art.
