Brazilian Museum Institute Abolished Amidst Controversy and National Museum Fire Aftermath

The Brazilian Institute of Museums (Ibram) was abolished by Provisional Measure No. 850, made public on September 10. This move is widely seen as a significant blow to the country's cultural sector, with critics arguing it was a premeditated act of dismantling rather than a response to the catastrophic fire at the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro on September 2. Ibram's president, Marcelo Mattos Araújo, had his departure announced by the Ministry of Culture on August 31, the day before the fire, with a statement from Minister Sérgio Sá Leitão praising his 'absolute competence.' Araújo's exit is interpreted by many as a direct disagreement with the institute's extinction. The new Brazilian Museum Agency (Abram) will be responsible only for 23 federal museums, leaving hundreds of others without support. A legal challenge has been filed with the Supreme Federal Court (STF) by Sebrae, questioning the use of its resources for Abram's funding. The abolition occurred without prior consultation or serious preliminary studies, shocking museum professionals across the country. Ibram, created in 2009, was a federal autarchy that established a national museum policy, frequent studies, meetings, and initiatives like the National Museum Registry, which mapped over 3,700 institutions.
