Brazil Wins Golden Lion at 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale

On May 20, 2023, the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, themed 'The Laboratory of the Future' and curated by Lesley Lokko, announced its major awards. The Golden Lion for Best National Participation was awarded to Brazil's 'Terra [Earth]' pavilion, overseen by Gabriela de Matos and Paulo Tavares, which the jury, led by Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli, commended for its focus on Indigenous and Black philosophies. The UK received a special mention for 'Dancing before the moon.' DAAR was honored with the Golden Lion for Best Participant for 'Ente di Decolonizzazione – Borgo Rizza,' while Olalekan Jeyifous took home the Silver Lion for 'All-Africa Protoport (AAP).' Demas Nwoko was recognized with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. The event continues until November 26, 2023.
